Resumen del libro
My thesis focuses on how literary criticism enlightens our understanding of the relationship between aesthetics and politics. In my dissertation, I examine how some Chilean post-dictatorship fiction (films, novels and poetry) reveals, contrary to the official discourse of separation, that there is continuity between the dictatorship (past) and democracy (present). I study this notion of continuity through three components. First, I use the political metaphor of the return of the dead as people who the dictatorship made disappear, to explore how the present is in debt to the past. In other words, the return of the dead, as manifested in a film and two novels, is a symptom of what the present needs to hide in order to exist, thus hindering the closure of the present. Second, I investigate how poetry represents an incapability of eloquence throughout the analysis of Gonzalo Millans book of poems, La ciudad. In this book, Millan proposes a rewriting of history in which the elements that were initially eliminated from the present appear. Third, I explore how the present free market treats the past like old merchandise that must be replaced. Carmen Berenguer uses experimental poetry to denounce the disappearance of elements of the past, popular subjects, and women political prisoners as necessary exclusions from the present. Finally, departing from the notion of continuity, I develop a theoretical framework in relation to politics based on the critical work of Hernan Vidal, which emphasizes the universality of human rights as a means to contradict current consensus. I propose a rehabilitation of universality (as Alain Badiou and Ernesto Laclau present, among others) as a central concept of radical thought. The construction of new universalities can provide alternatives to neoliberal consensus.
